Tree Crop Cultivation Training at Trichy – Learning Beyond Conventional Farming 🌱

Another Training, Another Opportunity to Learn

At Tamilnad Irrigation Equipments, our work with farmers is not limited to irrigation systems alone. Understanding different crops, cultivation methods, and the challenges faced by farmers helps us recommend better irrigation solutions.

As part of this approach, we regularly attend training programmes conducted by Isha Foundation, depending on the topics covered. We have also been closely associated with Isha Foundation through our business relationship for several years, supporting their initiatives by supplying irrigation solutions for farmers.

Recently, we had an opportunity to attend one such training programme on tree crop cultivation, conducted at the SRM Medical College campus in Trichy.

Interestingly, this training was also en route to our Thindivanam farm visit, making it a perfect opportunity to combine our field visit with a day of learning.

Learning About Tree-Based Farming

The training programme covered several interesting aspects of natural and sustainable farming.

The sessions continued until lunch and covered practical topics such as:

  • 🌱 Live mulching and its importance in maintaining soil moisture
  • 🌳 Multi-layer farming and making better use of available land
  • 🐛 Natural pest management methods
  • 🌾 Soil enrichment and improving the overall health of the farm
  • 🌿 Various approaches to sustainable tree crop cultivation

As someone involved in irrigation, these sessions are particularly useful because crop requirements and cultivation practices directly influence how an irrigation system should be designed.

But the post-lunch session was what really caught our attention.

Yes, Apple in 45°C!

The afternoon session featured an interesting farmer from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh – Mr. Ramana Reddy.

And his story was something we definitely did not expect to hear.

He is cultivating apples.

Yes, APPLES.

And this is not in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, or any other traditionally known apple-growing region.

He is cultivating them in Anantapur, where summer temperatures can reach around 45°C.

For anyone familiar with apple cultivation, this immediately sounds surprising.

How Did He Do It?

Mr. Ramana Reddy had initially imported an apple variety from Israel and began experimenting with it under the climatic conditions of Anantapur.

Through his efforts and experimentation, he has successfully developed the cultivation of this variety in his region.

Today, the trees have started flowering and fruiting, demonstrating that with the right variety, suitable cultivation practices, and careful farm management, it may be possible to grow crops beyond their traditionally known climatic zones.

His journey was genuinely fascinating.

It also reminded us of something we frequently see in agriculture:

Innovation often begins when someone is willing to try what others believe may not be possible.

And Then Came Dates!

Apple cultivation wasn't the only surprise.

Mr. Ramana Reddy is also cultivating date palms, using varieties that he sourced from the Arab region.

His farm has therefore become a practical example of experimenting with different crops and varieties that are not traditionally associated with the hot climate of Anantapur.

What makes the story even more interesting is that he is now developing a nursery to produce and sell these apple saplings to other interested farmers.

From importing a variety and experimenting with it to successfully growing the trees and eventually developing a nursery around them, his journey is a great example of how agricultural experimentation can open up new possibilities.

We Couldn't Resist Bringing Some Home! 🌱🍎

The session was not just informative for us—it also gave us an opportunity to experiment ourselves.

We purchased two apple saplings from his nursery.

Now comes the interesting part.

We are going to plant these two trees at our own farm and see how they perform.

Will they adapt?

Will they grow well?

And most importantly...

Will we actually get apples from our farm? 🍎

We don't know yet.

But that's exactly what makes farming interesting.

We'll have to wait, observe, learn, and see how these two trees develop.

Learning Beyond Irrigation

Our association with farmer training programmes like these gives us an opportunity to understand agriculture from a much broader perspective.

Every crop has its own requirements, and every farm has its own set of challenges. Exposure to different cultivation methods, crop varieties, and farmers' experiences helps us understand those requirements better.

The tree crop cultivation training at Trichy was another valuable learning experience for us—and the story of growing apples in the hot climate of Anantapur was certainly the highlight of the day.

Now, we have two little apple trees waiting to begin their journey at our farm.

Let's see how they grow. 🌱🍎
