Building a Self-Sufficient Farm with Automated Irrigation at Chennimalai, Erode
Turning a Weekend Dream into a Sustainable Future
Every farm has a story, and this one began with a simple phone call. We recently received an enquiry through a close friend of ours, a permaculturist, regarding a young couple working in the IT industry. Although they are currently based in Chennai, their roots are in Erode, and they had recently purchased a 2-acre property near Chennimalai with a dream of transforming it into a productive farm and, eventually, their peaceful retirement home.
Their vision extended far beyond growing crops. They wanted to build a self-sustaining farm where nature, technology, and sustainability worked together in harmony. To bring this vision to life, they approached Tamilnad Irrigation Equipments for a reliable and future-ready irrigation solution.
Understanding the Vision
Every successful irrigation project begins with understanding the farmer's goals rather than simply installing equipment.
Working closely with the permaculturist, we studied the proposed farm layout and developed an irrigation plan that complemented the principles of sustainable farming.
The plan included:
- A combination of drip irrigation for trees and orchards.
- Sprinkler irrigation for open cultivation areas.
- A fully automated irrigation system to minimize manual intervention.
- A design that could efficiently manage irrigation across different sections of the farm.
Since the owners live in Chennai, automation was not just an added feature—it was an essential part of the project. The system needed to irrigate the farm reliably even when they were away.
A Farm Designed Around Sustainability
One of the most interesting aspects of this project was the couple's commitment to becoming as self-sufficient as possible.
Instead of applying for an electricity (EB) connection, they chose to power the entire irrigation system using solar energy. This decision aligned perfectly with the farm's philosophy of reducing dependency on conventional resources while embracing renewable energy.
Water is drawn from a borewell, stored in a temporary sump constructed using pond lining sheets—a practical and cost-effective solution—and then distributed throughout the farm using the automated irrigation network.
Overcoming the Technical Challenge
While the concept was exciting, it also presented a unique engineering challenge.
Automation drives require a continuous single-phase power supply to remain operational. Since there was no EB connection available at the farm, maintaining uninterrupted power for the automation controller became the biggest hurdle.
Our technical team carefully evaluated the situation and designed a dedicated solution.
To ensure seamless operation, we installed a mini solar power system exclusively for the automation drive and control panel. This independent power source allows the controller to remain active throughout the day, enabling the irrigation system to function exactly as scheduled.
This solution perfectly complemented the farm's off-grid approach without compromising on automation or reliability.
Irrigation Planned for Every Corner of the Farm
Although the property spans only 2 acres, it has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate multiple farming activities.
The irrigation system was customized to serve each section efficiently, including:
- 🌾 Paddy cultivation
- 🥥 Coconut plantation
- 🍎 Mixed fruit orchard
- 🐄 Cattle shed and dedicated fodder area
- 🏡 Farmhouse surroundings
To simplify day-to-day operations, we installed a Mobitech Wired Automation Controller, an ideal choice for compact farms where wired communication provides reliable and efficient control.
Project Outcome
With careful planning, precise installation, and the dedication of our experienced technicians, the entire project was completed successfully.
Since commissioning, the automation system has been operating smoothly without a single service issue, providing the owners with complete peace of mind despite living hundreds of kilometers away.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful irrigation design, renewable energy, and automation can come together to create a truly future-ready, self-sufficient farm.
At Tamilnad Irrigation Equipments, we believe irrigation is more than just delivering water—it is about building systems that empower farmers, conserve resources, and make farming smarter for generations to come.
