Creating a Forest with Smart Irrigation – An Automated Drip Irrigation Project at Olapalayam

From Ancestral Land to a Thriving Green Forest

Some farming projects are driven by commercial goals, while others are inspired by a vision that will benefit future generations. This project at Olapalayam, near Kangayam, is one such inspiring journey.

Our customer, currently based in Erode, owns 7.18 acres of ancestral land at Olapalayam. Instead of developing the property for conventional agriculture, the family had a much larger dream—to transform the entire land into a native forest that would stand for decades to come.

To bring this vision to reality, they partnered with Vanathirkkul Tiruppur, an organization that actively supports landowners and farmers interested in afforestation and ecological restoration. As their irrigation partner, Tamilnad Irrigation Equipments was entrusted with designing and implementing an efficient, automated irrigation system capable of supporting thousands of young saplings during their most critical growth stage.

Understanding the Project

After the land preparation and pitting work were completed, our technical team visited the site to study the terrain, available water resources, and plantation layout.

The project involved planting approximately 3,600 saplings across the 7.18-acre property. Since the plantation consisted primarily of long-term native timber species, the irrigation system had to ensure uniform water distribution while remaining simple, reliable, and economical to operate.

Our objective was to design a system that would support healthy plant establishment today while remaining efficient for years to come.

Designing an Efficient Irrigation System

The farm's primary water source is a borewell, with water stored in a reinforced concrete sump having a storage capacity of approximately 2,10,000 litres.

Based on the plantation layout, we carefully designed the drip irrigation network to optimize both water usage and operational efficiency.

Our Design Approach

  • Approximately 400 trees were grouped under each irrigation valve.
  • The entire plantation was divided into 10 irrigation zones, ensuring balanced water distribution throughout the property.
  • Since the customer wanted to keep the initial investment within a planned budget, we recommended our basic automation controller, providing the convenience of automatic irrigation without unnecessary additional costs.
  • To meet the hydraulic requirements of the project, we suggested installing a 7.5 HP, 2-stage openwell submersible vertical pump, capable of delivering the required discharge and pressure for the entire irrigation system.

This approach achieved the perfect balance between performance, reliability, and affordability.

More Than Just a Forest

Although the primary objective was afforestation, the plantation was thoughtfully designed to create a balanced and self-sustaining ecosystem.

The majority of the land has been planted with native timber species, including:

  • 🌳 Teak
  • 🌳 Kumizh
  • 🌳 Mahogany
  • 🌳 Neem

To complement the forest plantation and meet the family's future needs, coconut and mango trees have also been planted at suitable locations for personal consumption.

One of the most unique aspects of this project is the 2,10,000-litre concrete sump, which has been thoughtfully designed to serve a dual purpose. Besides storing irrigation water, it can also be used as a recreational pool, adding both functionality and value to the property.

Reducing Labour Through Smart Irrigation

As with every plantation project, reducing maintenance requirements was an important consideration.

To minimize manual cleaning and simplify routine maintenance, we installed a semi-automatic filtration system. This significantly reduces labour requirements while ensuring clean water reaches every dripper, improving the overall reliability and lifespan of the irrigation system.

Combined with automated irrigation scheduling, the system enables efficient watering with minimal human intervention—an ideal solution for landowners who cannot be present at the farm every day.

Project Outcome

The project progressed exactly as planned, with the plantation and irrigation works executed systematically.

Today, nearly 3,600 saplings are supported by a carefully engineered automated drip irrigation system that delivers water efficiently across all ten irrigation zones.

What makes this project truly special is its purpose. Rather than simply cultivating crops, this family is creating a forest that will benefit generations to come—improving biodiversity, enhancing groundwater recharge, capturing carbon, and leaving behind a lasting environmental legacy.

We are proud to have contributed to this meaningful initiative by providing an irrigation solution that is reliable, efficient, and designed for long-term sustainability.

At Tamilnad Irrigation Equipments, we believe every irrigation system is an investment—not only in agriculture, but also in the future of our environment.
