A Day with Isha Foundation – Learning Beyond the Farm

On 22.06.2025, I had the privilege of attending a one-day farmer training program held at Kulasekaram, Kanyakumari, organized by the Isha Foundation, Coimbatore, as part of their inspiring movement – “Cauvery Calling.”

This initiative is designed to create awareness about the benefits of tree-based farming systems and aims to help farmers transition from conventional farming methods to more sustainable and long-term agricultural practices. Through this program, Isha provides high-quality saplings at subsidized prices, making it easier for farmers to start their journey toward eco-friendly cultivation.

We at Tamilnad Irrigation Equipments are humbled and proud to support this mission. For the past 15 years, we’ve been working closely with Isha Foundation by supplying efficient irrigation sprinklers. These systems play a vital role in nurturing the saplings distributed to farmers across Tamil Nadu and beyond—indirectly helping to restore soil health, increase biodiversity, and improve farmer livelihoods.

Objective of the Program

The core objective of the program was to:

  • Promote tree-based farming as an alternative to conventional agriculture
  • Encourage the cultivation of high-value, long-term crops
  • Introduce farmers to the concept of multi-level or integrated cropping systems
  • Empower farmers with technical knowledge and market insights to increase profitability
  • Raise awareness about the ecological and economic importance of planting trees

The training combined hands-on knowledge, real-life farmer success stories, and expert advice from agroforestry practitioners.

Crops Highlighted in the Training

During the session, specific emphasis was placed on cultivating the following high-potential crops:

  1. Avocado – A superfood gaining strong market demand both locally and internationally
  2. Pepper – Known for its medicinal value and export potential
  3. Nutmeg – A highly valued spice with long-term yield and income stability

These crops are particularly suitable for agroforestry systems and can thrive in different climatic zones with proper planning and irrigation.

Key Takeaways and Insights

Here are the valuable insights and learnings I gathered from the session:

  • 🌱 Monocropping (single-crop farming) often limits income. Instead, adopting multi-level or layered cropping systems can generate multiple revenue streams and improve land use efficiency.
  • 🌿 Pepper and nutmeg are no longer confined to hilly regions—they can also be grown as intercrops in plains, especially under partial shade or with taller trees like avocado or teak.
  • 🌰 Nutmeg trees are a long-term asset, offering yields across four to five generations—making them a legacy crop for farming families.
  • 🥑 Avocado has huge commercial potential, particularly in urban and export markets. A single healthy tree can produce up to 1 tonne (1000 kg) of fruit annually under optimal care.
  • 🍃 Pepper is a low-maintenance crop, suitable even for part-time or new-generation farmers who prefer smart and manageable agriculture models.
  • 💧 Efficient irrigation systems—especially sprinklers and automation—are essential for successful tree farming, reducing dependency on labor and ensuring consistent water supply.

Reflections

This training reinforced the idea that the future of farming lies not just in growing more, but in growing smarter—with diversified crops, long-term thinking, and ecological balance.

For young and aspiring farmers who wish to enter agriculture with a tech-savvy and sustainable mindset, such programs are a goldmine of knowledge. It was inspiring to meet fellow farmers, exchange ideas, and learn from Isha's deep commitment to building a greener, more prosperous future.

We look forward to sharing more of our experiences and continuing our support in this journey towards sustainable farming. Follow this space for more insights, success stories, and updates on our projects.
